The Book Information Post

There has been some interest in my upcoming book release. So i thought i would put together a post with the aim of providing some general information about the book, the setting and the overall plan.

The Book
The Book is called the Wander's Tale Esmor, and it is an adventure book. Simiply put it follows two young adults as they try to reach a place called Mymt Lagoon in a Kingdom called Esmor. The reason they are dong this is simply to see the Lagoon.

Though i am a fan of the Fantasy genre i do get a bit tired of how high the stakes are set in fantasy books. Often main characters have to contend with vast threats, and failure means the end of their world as they know it, and sometimes the literal end of the world.  While i don't mind those kind of stories i feel that for them to be effective readers must be given a reason to care about the world at stake, and given that this is the first book in the setting readers will have no reason to care at all.

In my previous post about this i mentioned that i was dissatisfied with my current job, and i was able to draw inspiration from that for this book. Esme, a young female mage in training, feels fed up with  being told to constantly study and train in order to become a mage. She has never  set foot outside the city she was born but is told constantly of what lies beyond the city walls, for Esmor (the name of the region) is a vast, mostly unexplored and wild land. One day she decides sod it, she doesn't care about studying any more and decides to go to Mymt Lagoon, a lake in the far east of Esmor.

This who idea came from my dissatisfaction with my job, and the fact that i can see dense bush, hills, and snow capped mountains from where i work. It wasn't an uncommon desire for me too look out the widow, see those snow capped mountains and wish that i could just get up and walk there. I was able to take this desire and make a book from it, and hopefully in doing so accurately express that desire in a way that is interesting to read.

The book will be released on Kindle for Ebooks and via a website called Createspace for those who prefer physical copies. Links to both will be posted to this blog on November 21st.

The Setting
I have mentioned the name "Esmor" and so is should explain the setting. Esmor is the name given to one of the five regions, and the human kingdom located in that region, of a continent called Unith on a planet named Westruna.  The other four regions are called: The Heartward Isles, The Northlands, Rulun and Drackmoor. Unith wont be the only content but i thought it best to start of simple and expand when i need too. The same goes for the races, which are :Humans, Elves, Dwarves and Orcs.

On top of this there is a place called the Skittering Dark; the name given to the vast network of Tunnels, caves and caverns the run underneath Westruna's surface. The Skittering Dark is not a place anyone of stable sanity would go willingly.

I am hesitant to provide anything more than only the barest of descriptions for the setting, as i prefer people to learn about it from reading the books.  I am not a fan of unnecessary exposition so there is room for readers to figure things out for themselves.

The Plan
I plan on trying to get one book and one short story out per year. The short story will be related too the previous book and will be free, with the aim of building audience goodwill and expanding the setting.

After the Wanders Tale, and the short story Her, will come a book called The First War. While the Wanders Tale is a more light hearted adventure book the First War is a book of war. It covers the first war ever waged on Unith and is already looking to be a far longer book than the Wanders Tale.

On top of this i have a Blog, Facebook Page and email address set up for the books. None of them are live yet but on release day the Tales From Westruna Facebook Page, Blog and Email address will go live. The FB page and Blog will have information about upcoming books, a release schedule, a progress tracker for the current book and commissioned artwork for the setting to help people get a better idea of what Westruna looks like.

The release schedule and progress tracker are part of my desire to be as transparent as possible. Often you will be waiting for news on upcoming book only to get periodic updates from the author, or you will want to know what comes next after a series has finished only to no announcement on the matter for some time, and the release schedule and progress tracker are my ways of countering this.

Thats all for now. This blog will remain up through out as my separate Wargames Blog, and i hope to return to doing content for it ASAP.  Until netx time.

The Dice Odyssey on Hold

There has been a distinct lack of content on this blog for the past few months. This is mainly because i have been diverting all my free time to writing my own series of Fantasy novels.

I have always had a love for the fantasy genre, and after job dissatisfaction reached its limits i decided to start writing my own fantasy books with the aim to one day become a full time author. My first book is nearing completion and i hope to have it published by December 1st this year, with other books to follow.

This is why this blog has been forgotten as of late,  all the time i would spend working it has gone to my book and setting. I hope that, once the first book is published, i will have some time to come back and do more narrative battle reports and similar content, but that wont be until December/January. Until next time.

Mordheim City of the Dammed Early Access: First Look

This morning i purchased the early access version of Mordheim City of the Dammed from Steam, this is a game i have been looking forward too for some time. Since a lot of the readers of this blog will have both played the GW version of Mordheim (and most likely have loved it) and play video games i decided to write up a "First Impressions" post of the game. Note that this isn't a review as the game is only in early access but from what i have seen so fare this game has a good chance at being a worthy computer adaption of the game. I will look at 3 aspects of the game for his post, the Mechanics, the Graphics and Performance and the Lore.

The Current Loading Screen
Mechanics

Starting with the basic turn order all members of both Warbands are assigned an initiative value that determines in which order they can act. When a member can act you move them with the WASD keys in third person camera view, on a side note i enjoy being able to control my Warband in 3rd person, it brings out the detail of the character models and helps with Immersion, you feel more like a Warband Leader than a all seeing god with a birds eye view of the battle.

Games Workshop is Really Not Your Friend

For many reader's their response to the title of this post will be "Thank you captain obvious", however GWs most recent anti consumer move (the one that inspired this post) should really hammer that line home. Let me make it clear: Games Workshop doesn't like you, it doesn't value you as a customer, it doesn't care about you and it certainly doesn't respect you, all we (the legions of people who buy things from GW) are revenue flow to Games Workshop. Revenue flow that can be condensed to at will, talked to as if we were stupid and above all we are the kind of revenue flow  whose reactions to GW's moves are completely ignored.

No doubt many of you will be wondering what sparked that decidedly dark and grim opening paragraph, allow me to explain. Today i was linked to an in depth article that did a excellent job of explaining GW's recent move to try and limit the sale of its products to only Games Workshop stores. If they succeeded then, in Australia, stores similar to Mighty Ape, Slave to Painting and The Hobby Store would not be able to sell GW products any more meaning no more discounted GW product, and considering that GW already has raised the Aus (and NZ) price of its product to ridiculous heights already it will only make things worse for Australian GW hobbyists .

The Liebster Awards

Late last week i noticed that a fair few blogs i follow had all done posts about something called a Liebster Award. For those unaware the Liebster Award is a way of promoting small blogs, the way the Liebster Award does this is that when your blog is nominated for the award you nominated a number of other blogs who you feel deserved the extra attention and the way you nominate another blog is by commenting on one of their posts, telling them you have nominated their blog and provide them a link back to your post about the award.

The award in all its glory
I have been nominated once by the Grumpy Guardsman over at Cadia's Creed and once more by Herman over at Wargames Obsession. I would like to thank both Grumpy (who often provides the counter opinion to my own on GW, and is as such a joy to read for healthy debate is a sign of a healthy community) and Herman (who i know from the Kapiti Wargames Club and is a wonderful person in general) for nominating my humble blog. Now for my nominations, i have 11 blogs to nominate so lets get going.

The Imperial Patrol
Jayden has designed a blog that is easy to read, and has been able to articulate his views and opinions on issues regarding 6/7th ed 40k extremely well. He cover Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, Flames of War and a few other systems.

A Blog of Blood and Bones
I first met Nick via a email exchange that occurred a while back, during this email conversation i was linked to his blog, and i was impressed by what i saw. Nick has recently converted from 40k to Fantasy and started a Vampire Count army, he is a very good painter and convertor and i would advise that all fans of the Vampire Count army check out his blog.

And Then There Was One

Recently my co author here on this blog has left for a fresh start. This was partially in response to my removing of the recaster posts, but also because he had been wanting to do this for some time and now seemed like a good time to do it. His blog is called The Imperial Patrol and will be linked on my blog roll.

With Jayden's departure the focus of this blog will shift. There will be a marked decrease in the amount of 40k related content goes up as my focus is fantasy not 40k, although there will still be a few 40k posts as i am still working on my 40k malal chaos space marine army.
Like wise Jayden’s blog will focus on 40k with a bit of fantasy thrown in. I wish Jayden well in his endeavours. Until next time.

The Beauty of Fantasy

Fantasy has always been my favourite genre of book, movie and video game. It has a quality to that has drawn me in and captured my attention. Depth, Wisdom, Hope, Beauty and Courage, these are all things i find in Fantasy.

Skyrim is one of my most loved Fantasy games, its beauty is spectacular.

We interrupt your normal programming......

I have long internally debate about if i should post non war gaming related content to this blog. Yes it is my blog but my audience comes here expecting war gaming related content and i am more than happy to provide that.  However after coming home from work today i looked at my youtube subscriptions to see a video that, after watching, i decided i had to talk about.

I play video games, in my spare time when i am not working, eating, sleeping, painting, going out to see friends or war gaming. And in order to avoid spending 90 or so dollars on a bad video game i have subscribed to a YouTube channel called TotalBiscuit (A professional video game reviewer) who has saved me from buying many games that looked good on paper (or in this case game trailers). When i got back home today i saw the below video in my subscription list and, interested by the title i decided to take a look, i will allow Mr Biscuit to explain further.

Now i think we can all agree that, regardless if we play video games or not, we all find reviews of things we are interested in, be they warhammer army books, movies, T.V shows or video games, useful. And the idea that a company could remove a negative review at whim reflects badly on both that company and the site that hosted the video. So i echo TotalBiscuit's call to spread the word about this, and who knows, perhaps the video may be allowed to be re uploaded and continue to save people money.

I dont plan to do many of these non warhammer related posts but i felt that the subject in this case was important enough to warrant it and video games and wargaming aren't that different and many of those who war game also play video games and visa versa.

Normal programing will resume after this post, that will certainly include my report on Skitter leap and my showcasing of my new Treeman Ancient (go Wood Elves). Until next time.
